Summary
- A 15cm colon lesion was successfully removed using advanced endoscopy.
- The patient, an 80-year-old woman, avoided open abdominal surgery.
- Zoom scope technology enhanced precision, preserving the patient's colon.

Doctors at Apollo Speciality Hospitals have successfully treated an 80-year-old woman for a significant colon lesion, avoiding the need for open surgery. The patient presented with symptoms of rectal bleeding and abdominal pain, which led to the discovery of a large adenoma, a type of polyp with a high risk of malignancy.
Given the lesion's size and location, a specialized Advanced Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) was performed. This procedure utilizes zoom scope technology, offering high magnification and enhanced visual clarity. The six-hour ESD allowed for the complete, one-piece removal of the 15-cm lesion while carefully preserving the patient's colon.
Following the procedure, a histopathological examination confirmed the lesion was non-cancerous. This outcome successfully prevented the potential progression to colorectal cancer and allowed the patient to avoid a bowel resection and major surgery, according to R. Ravi, clinical lead for Gastroenterology, Liver Disease and Advanced Endoscopy.
