Colon Cancer: Millions Unaware of Easy Home Tests
5 Mar
Summary
- Half of Americans don't know colon cancer screening can be done at home.
- Younger patients often have their digestive symptoms dismissed by doctors.
- Cost and fear are the biggest barriers to colon cancer screening.
Colon cancer has become the leading cause of cancer death for individuals under 50, despite being highly preventable. A new survey reveals a significant lack of awareness regarding screening options, with 50% of Americans unaware that tests can be conducted at home. This knowledge gap, coupled with healthcare providers dismissing concerns from younger patients, exacerbates the growing public health emergency.
Many are also unaware of the various screening methods available, including colonoscopies and at-home stool tests. While these tests can detect hidden blood or DNA, misunderstandings persist. For instance, many don't realize a positive non-invasive test requires a follow-up colonoscopy. Cost and fear are cited as the primary obstacles preventing individuals from seeking screening, with approximately 48% identifying these as barriers.
Younger individuals, in particular, face challenges. One-third of survey respondents, and 45% of those under 45, reported that doctors had dismissed their digestive symptoms. This dismissal is critical as early colon cancer often presents with no symptoms. While current guidelines recommend average-risk adults begin screening at age 45, those with risk factors should consult their doctor about earlier testing.
