Cold Viruses Surge as Flu & COVID Dip
28 Apr
Summary
- Cold-causing viruses are on the rise despite other illnesses decreasing.
- Rhinoviruses cause half of common colds, with over 200 variants.
- Enteroviruses can be more serious, causing millions of infections annually.

As flu and COVID-19 cases recede, cold-causing rhinoviruses and enteroviruses are experiencing a notable increase. Recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data indicates that weekly positive tests for these viruses have risen to approximately 20 percent, a jump from 16 percent earlier in April. These viruses spread easily and can affect all age groups, with infants and children being more vulnerable.
Rhinoviruses are accountable for half of all common colds, and together with enteroviruses, there are over 200 distinct types. While colds are generally mild and resolve within a week, complications like sinus infections and bronchitis can occur. Enteroviruses, often more severe than rhinoviruses, are responsible for millions of infections and tens of thousands of hospitalizations annually in the U.S. Both virus types can spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, with some enteroviruses also transmitted via fecal matter, particularly in settings like daycares and schools.
