Coeliac Sufferers Face Soaring Costs, Demand Food Vouchers
23 Feb
Summary
- Petition urges government to fund gluten-free food vouchers for coeliacs.
- Gluten-free foods cost 183% more than regular alternatives.
- Coeliac UK reports 7 in 10 find shopping gluten-free impacts quality of life.

A parliamentary petition demanding government-funded gluten-free food vouchers for coeliac disease sufferers has surpassed 10,000 signatures, prompting an official response. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, MPs will debate the issue. Proponents argue that gluten-free foods, which cost 183% more on average, place an undue burden on those with limited incomes.
Coeliac UK reports that seven in ten individuals find shopping for gluten-free food negatively impacts their quality of life due to cost and availability. Between March 2022 and March 2024, the price disparity was significant, with bread being 4.5 times more expensive and pasta/cereals twice as costly. This financial strain is compounded by the recent cost of living crisis.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition requiring a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet. Symptoms can range from digestive issues to fatigue and anaemia. Untreated, it can lead to serious complications like osteoporosis and, rarely, small bowel cancer. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests followed by a biopsy. While there is no cure, a strict gluten-free diet managed by medical professionals is the only treatment.
