- CKM syndrome links obesity, diabetes, kidney, and cardiovascular diseases.
The inaugural Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Health National Conclave 2026 recently concluded in Thiruvalla, Keralam, advocating for a unified approach to tackle the increasing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. The conclave emphasized addressing these interconnected lifestyle diseases together, given their shared underlying pathophysiology related to excess adipose tissue and insulin resistance.
Over 400 healthcare professionals, public health experts, and policymakers participated in the event, organized by the National Resource Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases and Believers Church Medical College Hospital. They debated simple, sustainable, and cost-effective community-level interventions for CKM syndrome, defined as a disorder linking obesity, diabetes, CKD, and CVD.
Discussions highlighted the shift from disease-specific management to an integrated strategy encompassing prevention, early risk identification, lifestyle modifications, and community engagement. Experts stressed the importance of considering factors beyond traditional medical interventions, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and mental well-being in managing CKM syndrome.
A CKM Declaration, outlining policy recommendations for Keralam's health system, is slated for formal release in the state capital. This declaration will encapsulate the conclave's findings on essential preventive strategies and policy interventions.
