New Hope for Chronic Pain Sufferers
24 Aug
Summary
- Pain rehabilitation uses exercise and therapy.
- Psychological therapies help understand pain source.
- Deprived areas face higher chronic pain risk.

Julie-Ann Walkden found a new way to manage her chronic pain, moving beyond medication that left her feeling unwell and confused. She discovered that understanding the origin of her pain was key to regaining control of her life.
Walkden is one of more than 100 patients who have completed a specialized pain rehabilitation program. This innovative approach combines physical exercise with talking therapies and psychological interventions to help individuals comprehend their pain.
The program's success comes as a new study reveals a stark link between socioeconomic status and chronic pain in Northern Ireland. The findings indicate that people residing in the most deprived areas face a heightened risk of developing chronic pain and are three times more likely to suffer from depression related to their pain.
