Chinese surgeon Pan Xiangbin has been awarded Pakistan's "Star of Pakistan" for his cross-border work providing heart surgeries for children. The award, presented by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, highlights the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan.
Pan's team specializes in a percutaneous and non-fluoroscopic procedure using ultrasound imaging instead of X-rays. This minimally invasive technique allows treatment through blood vessels, avoiding open-heart surgery and radiation exposure. The procedure has been adopted by over 1,000 hospitals in more than 60 countries, aiding over 200,000 patients.
Further expanding medical outreach, Pan's team is integrating artificial intelligence and robotics. Recently, they performed a remote, robot-assisted mitral valve repair using ultrasound guidance. Pan aims to leverage these advanced technologies to improve efficiency and save more lives globally.
China's medical assistance also includes mobile surgical units and training local medical workers. In Pakistan, his team trained around 200 local professionals. Additionally, hospitals like Fuwai Yunnan Hospital are bringing children from neighboring countries for treatment, showcasing China's evolving international medical role.
