A two-year-old girl named Adalae's life took a dramatic turn when what initially appeared to be a common bacterial infection led to a startling discovery. After being sent home with antibiotics for suspected strep throat, her condition rapidly deteriorated.
Adalae's mother, trusting her instincts, sought further medical attention. Ultrasounds and CT scans revealed a large abdominal mass that had burst, causing internal bleeding. This led to emergency surgery on May 29 to remove the mass and her right ovary.
Following extensive waiting, the family received a diagnosis on June 2: a germ cell tumor, a rare cancer impacting approximately 3 percent of children. These tumors develop from immature cells and commonly originate in reproductive organs.
While the diagnosis was frightening, the family finds solace in the cancer's generally high survival rate and available treatment plans. Adalae is now recovering, and her mother hopes sharing their experience will encourage others to trust their parental instincts.
