Doctors recommended advanced radiation therapy as a crucial step before a bone marrow transplant to effectively target and eliminate cancer cells while safeguarding his developing organs.
This case highlights the importance of advanced techniques like Total Body Irradiation (TBI) in pediatric bone marrow transplants. TBI precisely targets the bone marrow, reducing the radiation exposure to healthy organs compared to conventional methods. The Radixact TomoTherapy platform with Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) was used for exceptional accuracy.
Following TBI, the medical team successfully performed a haploidentical bone marrow transplant, with the child's father serving as the donor when a fully matched donor was unavailable.
