Summary
- Mum suffered cardiac arrest during Jewish festival breakfast.
- Her children's recent CPR training was vital for survival.
- A neighbour's timely intervention with a defibrillator also helped.

Chana Hughes, a 44-year-old mother of five from London, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest on June 13, 2024, during a Jewish festival celebration. Fortunately, her children had recently received CPR training from her and were able to perform chest compressions. One of her sons administered aid while her daughter provided guidance, recalling their mother's instructions to compress firmly. A neighbour, Rikesh Shah, who was delayed and present by chance, also intervened with CPR and a defibrillator until emergency services arrived. Hughes was subsequently taken to Barnet General Hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma. After 11 days in hospital, she began her recovery, which included open heart surgery six months later to correct a leaky heart valve. The Jewish community rallied around her, adding the name Chaya to hers, symbolizing a change in destiny and offering immense support.
