Toddler Recovers After Life-Threatening Stroke at Age Two
23 Mar
Summary
- Hudson Reid suffered a stroke at age two due to dehydration-induced blood thickening.
- He spent four weeks in hospital undergoing transfusions and blood thinners.
- Despite initial grim prognoses, the toddler walked within a week of his stroke.

At just two years old, Hudson Reid from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, faced a life-threatening stroke. His mother initially mistook his symptoms for a bug, but his deteriorating condition led to a hospital visit where he was diagnosed with a blood clot and bleeding in his brain. Doctors attributed the stroke to severe dehydration causing his blood to thicken.
Hudson remained unconscious for five days and spent four weeks in the hospital. He received blood transfusions and was treated with blood thinners. Although medical professionals prognosticated that he might never walk or move again, Hudson defied expectations by walking within a week of the stroke.
Now seven, Hudson continues to manage the effects of his stroke, including a mild speech impediment and residual brain damage. His mother notes that while his movement is good, his brain damage becomes more apparent as he progresses through school. He receives regular occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and dietician support, alongside ongoing hospital check-ups and scans.
