Rabies Scare: Child Dies After Dog Lick
26 Sep
Summary
- A two-year-old boy died, with suspected rabies after a dog licked a wound.
- Doctors are uncertain about rabies as the cause of death, citing lack of lab evidence.
- Encephalitis is also being considered as a contributing factor to the child's death.
A two-year-old boy from Palnadu district in India has died, with health officials clinically suspecting rabies. The child's parents reported that a stray dog had licked a wound on his body days before he became unwell.
He was admitted to a private hospital on September 22, displaying unusual behavior, and later transferred to Guntur Government General Hospital as his condition worsened. Doctors at the GGH suspect encephalitis, a brain inflammation, may have contributed to his death.
Health officials have emphasized that without laboratory confirmation, rabies cannot be definitively linked to the death. While a dog lick on broken skin carries a rabies transmission risk, it is generally considered lower than that of a bite. Local medical officers conducted a survey in the boy's village, but no other similar incidents were reported.
