A young boy, aged three, who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia, has shown remarkable recovery after undergoing intensive treatment at GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore. The child presented with high-risk Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APML), a subtype accounting for less than 1% of pediatric blood cancers.
His condition was critical, marked by fever, altered sensorium, brain bleeds, and seizures, requiring mechanical ventilation and emergency surgery to relieve brain pressure. The medical team provided comprehensive care, including blood products and antifungal treatment for a subsequent bloodstream infection.
Further treatments involved chemotherapy, bone marrow evaluations, and neurosurgical intervention, including a cranioplasty to close his skull. The specialized care, far exceeding his family's financial capacity, was made possible through the corporate social responsibility initiative of the Linde Foundation.
Consultant Pediatric Haematology Oncology, Ajeitha L., noted the case's complexity due to the child's age and multiple severe complications. The boy has now achieved near-complete recovery, with normal speech and mobility, a testament to the successful multidisciplinary approach.
