Christmas Danger: 2/3 Adults Fear Child Abuse Rise

New polling indicates that two-thirds of adults in Northern Ireland believe the risk of harm or abuse towards children escalates during the Christmas period. Concerns are also high regarding exposure to domestic violence, with 72% of respondents sharing this view. These fears are attributed to various factors including financial strain, lack of school support, and increased family time at home.

Childline has launched a campaign, backed by actress Natalie Dormer, to shed light on the fact that Christmas can be the most perilous time of year for vulnerable children. The campaign aims to remind young people that help is available through Childline, even during the festive season when they may feel most isolated.

Reasons cited for increased risk include financial pressures, substance misuse, food insecurity, and the absence of school-based support systems. The NSPCC emphasizes that while the holidays should be joyful, they can present heightened dangers for some children, and Childline remains accessible 24/7 for those needing support.
