Chicken Pox Surges: Adults Urged to Vaccinate
28 Feb
Summary
- Over 8,851 chicken pox cases reported in two months.
- One death reported in February, a 53-year-old woman.
- Adults who haven't had chicken pox should get vaccinated.

Chicken pox cases are currently surging across the State, with more than 8,851 infections recorded in the past two months, including 4,457 cases in February alone. This rise in cases, predominantly affecting children, has unfortunately led to one reported death of a 53-year-old woman in Ernakulam during February. This seasonal uptick is occurring during the crucial board and entrance examination period, adding to parental stress.
Health officials emphasize that while chicken pox is typically mild in children, it can cause severe complications like pneumonia, sepsis, or encephalitis in adults, pregnant women, and the elderly. Therefore, vaccination is highly recommended for all adults who have not experienced a natural infection. The disease spreads through the respiratory route and direct contact, making it highly contagious, especially in school and hostel settings.
Vaccination against chicken pox is available in private hospitals but not part of the universal immunization schedule. Post-exposure prophylaxis vaccination within five days of exposure is also noted as highly effective. Even vaccinated individuals can experience breakthrough infections, which are usually mild but still require isolation to prevent further transmission.
