Summary
- Black slime found on ice machine dripping into food.
- Over 200 live cockroaches discovered in preparation areas.
- Milk crates used as shelves and torn cooler gasket noted.
The cafeteria and patient kitchen at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago were temporarily shut down following a health inspection on Friday, October 18, 2026. Inspectors discovered significant hygiene issues, including black slime on an ice machine that was dripping onto ice cubes used for food. More than 200 live cockroaches were found in multiple areas, indicating a substantial infestation.
Further violations included the use of milk crates for shelving, a torn gasket on a food preparation cooler, grease buildup, a leaking sink, and improperly stored utensils. Previous pest control and cleaning violations had not been addressed. Health officials mandated that the facilities clean and sanitize all surfaces and engage a pest control service.
The medical center stated they are taking necessary steps to rectify the findings and meet requirements to safely resume operations. Patients will continue to receive meals through alternative arrangements. It remains unclear when the kitchen and cafeteria are expected to reopen.
