Chia Seeds: Brain's Secret Weapon Against Processed Foods?

Summary
- Chia seeds may regulate appetite and reduce brain inflammation.
- Rats fed chia oil showed increased gene activity suppressing hunger.
- Chia products helped restore normal brain response to leptin.

New research from Brazilian scientists indicates that chia seeds may offer a potent defense against the detrimental effects of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on the brain and body. UPFs, often laden with saturated fats and sugars, have been linked to widespread adverse health impacts, including cognitive decline and disrupted satiety signals.
A study published in the journal Nutrition explored how chia flour and oil influenced rats' brains when fed an unhealthy diet high in lard and fructose. The findings revealed that chia oil consumption led to increased activity in genes that suppress hunger, potentially promoting feelings of fullness.
Furthermore, both chia flour and oil demonstrated an ability to improve the brain's response to leptin, a hormone that signals satiety. This restoration of normal brain function countered leptin resistance, a common issue in brains exposed to high-fat diets, thereby reducing the urge to overeat.
