Chennai Hospitals Overwhelmed by Illness Surge

Several private hospitals in Chennai are currently grappling with an overwhelming influx of patients presenting with respiratory infections, influenza, and dengue. This surge is particularly concerning as the city anticipates the arrival of the monsoon season. Outpatient departments are experiencing high patient volumes, hospital wards are nearing full capacity, and emergency room wait times for a bed can extend up to 12 hours.

Doctors report that patients are arriving with symptoms including high fever, sore throat, cough, severe body aches, and fatigue. While most individuals recover with medication and rest, a notable number require more intensive treatments like nebulization or intravenous fluids, leading to increased hospital admissions. The most common culprits are viral infections such as respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza, followed by influenza and dengue.

Experts highlight that the current rise in cases reflects both seasonal patterns and an increased population of vulnerable individuals. Patients with underlying health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer are at a greater risk of developing serious complications. Although the Directorate of Public Health notes that the overall severity of illness is not alarming, a recent death from dengue-related hemorrhagic shock serves as a stark reminder of potential dangers, especially for the elderly.
