Summary
- Over 300 vacancies exist for doctors, nurses, and technicians in Chennai.
- Recent hiring of 155 professionals has been undermined by attrition.
- Officials promise new hiring next month to address critical gaps.

Greater Chennai Corporation facilities are experiencing a critical shortage of medical professionals, with over 311 vacancies for doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and pharmacists. This comes despite the corporation hiring 155 doctors and health professionals a few months prior, as attrition has continued to impact service delivery. Residents in areas like Mogappair and Padi have voiced concerns over increased out-patient numbers and the need for more staff.
Six months ago, the corporation reported over 450 vacancies out of 819 sanctioned posts in public health. Even with recent recruitment efforts, clinical positions remain unfilled. For instance, 51 out of 94 medical officer posts were vacant, and 41 out of 75 pharmacist posts were unfilled. The situation for nurses has also reportedly worsened.
An official from the Chennai Corporation stated that recruitment for clinical professionals, including at least 19 additional doctors and more nurses, is scheduled for next month. These new hires are intended to fill existing vacancies and enhance services at health and wellness centers across the city.
