21 Feb
Summary
- Chennai empowers Vector Control Officer to procure essential mosquito-fighting supplies.
- Additional entomologists to be appointed to strengthen pest control efforts.
- Over 180 vacancies to be filled to boost disease prevention initiatives.

Residents of Chennai are experiencing a noticeable increase in mosquito-borne and zoonotic diseases. In response, the Chennai Corporation Council has passed resolutions to empower the Chief Vector Control Officer (CVCO). The CVCO can now procure necessary larvicides, adulticides, and advanced fogging equipment to combat the growing mosquito population.
Further strengthening preventive measures, the council will appoint additional entomologists at regional offices. These experts will monitor and report on diseases such as malaria, dengue, and scrub typhus. The civic body is also prioritizing the filling of 181 vacancies for basic health workers, alongside its existing workforce of over 1100 permanent and 2400 temporary malaria control workers.
These combined efforts aim to reach approximately 17 lakh households to curb mosquito breeding and mitigate the spread of vector-borne and zoonotic illnesses throughout the city. The enhanced powers and increased personnel are expected to significantly improve public health outcomes.
