Chennai Fever Alert: Chickenpox Cases Surge

Chennai has recorded the highest number of chickenpox cases in Tamil Nadu this year, with 476 infections reported so far. Across the state, 1,320 cases have been documented between January and March. This represents a notable increase compared to the approximately 1,000 cases seen during the same period last year.

Health experts attribute the current surge to typical seasonal patterns, exacerbated by rising temperatures which create ideal conditions for the virus's spread. The virus transmits through respiratory droplets, prompting advisories for immediate isolation of symptomatic individuals, especially those who are immunocompromised, children, and seniors.

Private hospitals are also observing a rise in chickenpox cases, with a consistent increase noted over the past four weeks. While this aligns with seasonal expectations, the intensity this year is a concern for medical professionals. They recommend staying hydrated and consuming water-rich foods to help regulate body temperature and advise vaccination for those not previously immunized.

Doctors are seeing an average of five to six new cases daily, predominantly among school-aged children but also affecting older teenagers and young adults. The early onset of the outbreak is linked to fluctuating temperatures, fostering favorable conditions for the virus. Experts strongly advise anyone experiencing fever and rashes to stay home and isolate to prevent further transmission.
