Summary
- Chennai aims for 400 daily dog sterilizations
- Over 1.68 lakh street dogs vaccinated
- 15 sterilization centers planned by mid-2027

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is intensifying measures to manage the stray dog population and bolster public safety, targeting an increase in sterilisation surgeries from 200 to 350-400 per day. The corporation also aims for complete anti-rabies vaccination coverage for all street and pet dogs.
As directed by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply department secretary, GCC will establish new sterilization centers, with each of the 15 zones receiving one center capable of sterilizing 20-25 dogs daily. These expansions are projected to be completed by mid-2027, alongside the recruitment of necessary veterinary personnel.
Currently, Chennai has an estimated 1.8 lakh street dogs. The GCC has administered anti-rabies vaccines to 1.68 lakh street dogs and 71,388 pet animals, also microchipping and licensing the latter. Existing facilities, like the Pulianthope center, are performing daily surgeries and pet animal treatments.
