Cancer Drug Costs Plummet: Hope for Indian Patients
24 Oct
Summary
- Cheaper immunotherapy drug nivolumab reduces costs significantly.
- Lower doses may be effective for Indian patients, further cutting expenses.
- India offers fewer immunotherapy drugs than China, highlighting access gaps.
Cancer care in India is undergoing a quiet transformation with increased accessibility to immunotherapy. Over the past six months, more patients are being prescribed nivolumab, a key immunotherapy drug, due to the availability of a more affordable version. This has brought down treatment costs from over a lakh rupees per cycle to approximately Rs 30,000.
Research from institutions like Tata Memorial Centre suggests that lower doses of nivolumab might be effective for Indian patients, potentially further reducing treatment expenses. This development offers a significant advantage, as nivolumab is effective across numerous cancers. Doctors report a substantial increase in prescriptions, indicating a widening access gap for this crucial treatment.
Despite these advancements, India's access to checkpoint inhibitors remains limited compared to countries like China, which offers a much larger number of these drugs. Recent government measures to cap trade margins on anti-cancer medicines aim to further reduce costs, projected to save Rs 2,500 crore annually.
However, challenges persist. Concerns exist that hospitals might not prioritize stocking cheaper alternatives due to potentially lower profit margins, impacting patient access. Experts emphasize that the true success of medical innovation lies in ensuring treatments are accessible to all patients, regardless of their financial situation, without causing hardship.
