Vision Lost: Hospital Sealed Amid Surgery Infection Scandal
29 Apr
Summary
- Hospital registration suspended due to infection allegations.
- At least three patients suffered severe vision loss post-surgery.
- Hospital operated without authorized ophthalmology beds.

Health authorities in Chandrapur district have suspended the registration of Christanand Hospital in Bramhapuri, sealing its operation theatre and inpatient department. This action follows allegations that post-cataract surgery infections led to severe vision loss in at least three patients.
The decision, made by civil surgeon Dr. Mahadev Chinchole on Monday, came after a preliminary inquiry indicated multiple violations of the Bombay Nursing Home Act, 1949, and serious lapses in ophthalmic care standards.
Investigations revealed the hospital was conducting eye surgeries without authorized ophthalmology beds and failed to meet mandatory norms. The affected patients underwent surgeries on February 19, with complaints surfacing on March 16. The hospital's registration suspension and sealing of departments are in effect until further notice.
The matter has been escalated to the state health department for a potential higher-level probe. While inpatient and surgical services are halted, the hospital's outpatient department will continue to operate temporarily. Hospital administration expressed confidence in resolving the issues and resuming services.
