The latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) for 2023-24 reveals a significant health burden in Chandigarh. Nearly 48.5% of men aged 15-49 years are now overweight or obese, a stark increase from previous surveys. This trend highlights a growing concern over lifestyle diseases within the city.
More than 40% of women in the same age bracket also face challenges with excess weight, with rates remaining high nationally. The survey further indicates elevated blood sugar levels affecting nearly 18% of women and over 17% of men aged 15 and above.
Hypertension remains a prevalent issue, with over 24% of men and 22% of women aged 15 and above experiencing elevated blood pressure or requiring medication. While rates have declined from past surveys, nearly one in four adults is still affected.
Other findings include improvements in menstrual hygiene awareness and product use among young women. However, tobacco use remains a concern among men, and alcohol consumption has seen a slight increase among women. The survey also points to growing financial and digital empowerment among women in Chandigarh.
