Dirty Air Fuels CF Lung Decline, Trust Warns

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust's 'Air Quality and Cystic Fibrosis: A Pragmatic Review' report is urging enhanced efforts to combat urban air pollution for the betterment of Britain's lung health. Parents of CF sufferers have expressed deep concerns, with some forced to relocate their families to seaside locations to shield their children from traffic fumes. Catherine Farrer, mother to an 11-year-old with CF, shared how they intentionally use quieter back roads to reach school, emphasizing that clean air should be a universal right.

The report, developed with the York Health Economics Forum, indicates that outdoor air pollution, including vehicle emissions, significantly contributes to a more rapid decline in lung function and elevates the risk of developing infections. Research from Imperial College London, supported by the charity, further investigates these impacts. Professor Ben Barratt of Imperial College London stresses that any improvement in air quality benefits the general population, especially vulnerable individuals, advocating for more robust environmental legislation.

For individuals with CF, the sticky mucus that obstructs their lungs makes them more susceptible to bacterial infections, often necessitating antibiotic treatment. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is advocating for a commitment to clean air policies, which include stricter air quality standards, enhanced monitoring, and more rigorous regulations on outdoor pollutants. This initiative aligns with a broader concern for public health, as a Royal College of Physicians report last year linked air pollution to approximately 30,000 deaths annually in the UK.
