CDSCO Detects Faulty Medicines: Delhi Has Spurious Drug

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has identified 221 drugs as either spurious or not of standard quality (NSQ) from samples tested during August's routine surveillance. This significant finding includes one spurious drug originating from the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, reportedly manufactured by unauthorized entities using a known brand name.
The regulatory authority stated that the identification of drugs as NSQ is based on failing specific quality parameters, such as labeling or sterility. The CDSCO regularly updates its portal with lists of identified NSQ drugs to keep stakeholders informed. Importantly, the regulator clarified that these findings pertain only to the specific batches tested and do not raise concerns about other batches of the same drug products available in the market.
This surveillance is conducted collaboratively with state drug regulators to ensure medicines meet quality standards and are removed if found substandard. Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller General of India, Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, also issued a directive warning against the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and NSAIDs, linking their overuse to chronic kidney disease.
