Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the deputy director and chief medical officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced her resignation on October 28, 2026. She will be leaving the role after serving just six months to prioritize time with her family.
Dr. Shuford's departure adds to the ongoing leadership changes at the CDC. Since the beginning of 2025, the agency has seen six different individuals serve as Director or Acting Director. The Senate recently confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as the agency's director earlier this summer.
Her final day at the CDC will be November 12, 2026. Following her departure, Satish Pillai is set to assume the responsibilities as acting chief medical officer and deputy director.
