Nine patients have had their eyes removed, and nine more have lost vision in one eye after contracting infections post-cataract surgery. These surgeries were performed on 30 patients during an eye camp at New Rajesh Hitech Hospital in Gorakhpur on February 1. Bacterial infections were confirmed by health department tests.
Within 24 hours of their procedures, many patients experienced severe pain and discharge, leading to 18 being referred to hospitals in Delhi, Lucknow, and Varanasi. The hospital has since been sealed, and a magisterial inquiry has been launched. Patients allege they were discharged shortly after surgery and developed complications the next day, with some undergoing treatment at AIIMS Delhi.
