Cats Offer Cancer Cure Clues
20 Feb
Summary
- Cat tumors show genetic changes similar to human cancers.
- Feline mammary cancers share driver genes with human breast cancer.
- This research may lead to new cancer therapies for humans and pets.

New research indicates that feline cancers share genetic similarities with human tumors, offering potential breakthroughs in cancer treatment for both species. Scientists analyzed nearly 500 pet cat tumors from five countries, revealing that the underlying mechanisms driving cancer formation in cats closely mirror those seen in humans.
This comprehensive study found comparable genetic changes across various cancer types, including a notable parallel between feline mammary carcinoma and human breast cancer. Specific genes, such as FBXW7 and PIK3CA, were identified as critical drivers in feline mammary tumors, with mutations in these genes also associated with aggressive human breast cancer.
