New research reveals that individuals in caregiving roles frequently experience isolation and anxiety due to the immense burden of supporting loved ones with chronic conditions.
A study indicated that 73% of caregivers feel guilty watching their loved ones endure pain, with 62% wishing they could take on their symptoms. However, this support role significantly impacts their own wellbeing.
Forty percent of caregivers reported experiencing anxiety, and 16% felt isolated. Nearly half stated that caregiving encroached on their personal time, while many also noted negative effects on sleep (41%) and social lives (37%).
Emotional support constitutes the primary role for caregivers (64%), but practical tasks like shopping (57%) and driving to appointments (50%) are also common. This support totals nearly eight hours weekly, with those aged 55-64 dedicating 11.5 hours on average.
Furthermore, 19% admitted the pressure of daily support strains their relationships. The research also found that 16% of caregivers actively search for new treatment options, with over half discovering potential treatments independently.
Despite extensive efforts, 70% of caregivers noted their loved ones haven't found adequate symptom management. Many were unaware of legal medical cannabis options in the UK, a treatment that has provided relief for patients like Sancharie Booth.
