Cardiff Cockroach Crisis: Infestations Soar Amidst Warmer Weather

Pest control services in Cardiff are experiencing a surge in cockroach infestation reports, with some companies receiving five to six calls weekly. Cardiff council recorded a 9% increase in cockroach reports at domestic properties between 2024 and 2025. Experts point to milder winters and increased urban density in flats and apartments as primary drivers for this escalation. German cockroaches, originating from Southeast Asia but dependent on humans in the UK, are the most prevalent species. These insects are known carriers of harmful bacteria, including those responsible for food poisoning and salmonella.

Residents like Sumesh Geevarghese have described cockroach infestations as highly stressful, with pests appearing from unexpected places like electrical appliances and sockets. While Cardiff council's treatment of cockroaches is not a statutory service, prompting some residents to hire private pest controllers, the issue is becoming more widespread. In contrast, rural areas of Wales have reported minimal cockroach activity. Entomologists suggest that warmer winters allow cockroach populations, typically found in ducts and drains, to survive periods that would previously have been lethal due to cold.

The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) further explains that apartment living, with its inherent warmth and proximity of residents, facilitates the spread of cockroaches. They emphasize that pests can affect anyone, regardless of cleanliness, and that infestations are controllable with professional intervention. While acknowledging that cockroach treatments can be challenging, especially in multi-occupancy buildings, the BPCA assures that effective solutions are achievable with proper preparation and professional pest control services.
