UK Tourists Warned: Shigella Outbreak on Cape Verde Islands

UK authorities have issued a travel warning for tourists heading to Cape Verde following a notable increase in Shigella sonnei infections among travellers returning from the islands. The UK Health Security Agency is investigating the situation, which has seen 109 out of 137 confirmed UK cases linked to recent travel to the popular African archipelago.

Shigella sonnei bacteria can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most individuals recover within a week, certain groups, such as the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and young children, are at a higher risk of developing serious complications like sepsis.

To minimize the risk of infection, Travel Health Pro recommends strict adherence to food and water hygiene, even in high-end accommodations. This includes frequent hand washing, ensuring food is recently prepared and thoroughly cooked, drinking only bottled or boiled water, avoiding ice, and being cautious with uncooked fruits and salads.
