A group of musicians, many of whom have been personally affected by cancer, are organizing a concert to support the Big Space Cancer Appeal. This initiative aims to raise £17.5 million for a new cancer centre at Cheltenham General Hospital.
The appeal was launched in 2024 by the Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals Charity. Flautist Suzy Blewett, a survivor of mouth cancer, spearheaded the organization of the free-to-attend concert, which will feature light music.
Blewett, a professional musician in Gloucestershire for over four decades, was inspired to give back nine months after her successful surgery. The ensemble includes musicians who have faced various cancers, including breast and bowel cancer, many having received treatment in Cheltenham and Gloucester.
Imogen Sims, a community fundraiser, highlighted that the planned state-of-the-art facility will significantly improve cancer care in Gloucestershire. While oncology staff are exceptional, the current building is inadequate, necessitating the new construction. Half of the required funds have already been raised.
The proposed cancer centre will feature modern patient rooms, dedicated space for clinical research trials, and a tranquil therapeutic garden. Additionally, existing facilities within the current oncology centre are slated for enhancement. The concert, titled 'A Spring Wind Serenade,' is scheduled for 18:00 BST on April 18 at Bethesda Methodist Church in Cheltenham, with donations collected at the event's conclusion.
