King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has initiated a novel program to provide emotional and practical support to cancer patients. Launched on Saturday, the "Cancer Survivor Program" connects individuals newly diagnosed with cancer to survivors who have successfully navigated the disease. This initiative aims to instill hope and reduce fear by facilitating direct interaction with those who have overcome similar challenges.
Survivors will dedicate their time twice a week, on Thursdays and Fridays at 3 pm, to interact with patients and their families in a specially arranged counseling room. This setting ensures privacy and comfort during these crucial discussions. The department of surgical oncology, led by Vijay Kumar, spearheaded this effort, recognizing the significant psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis.
To streamline the process, QR codes have been strategically placed within the department. Patients and their attendants can scan these codes to book appointments with available survivors at scheduled times. This innovative approach ensures that patients can readily access valuable insights and encouragement from those who have firsthand experience with cancer treatment and recovery.
