Stephen Cutts, a 53-year-old man from Sheffield, experienced a deeply emotional moment when he met his stem cell donor for the first time. The encounter occurred at a surprise event, where Cutts believed he was attending his own wedding anniversary celebration.
Unbeknownst to Cutts, his wife had arranged for Kevin McNicholl, a 24-year-old donor, to be present at the party. Cutts had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in April 2023 and underwent extensive treatment, including seven rounds of chemotherapy and a crucial stem cell transplant. This life-saving procedure was performed by an anonymous donor.
Following the successful transplant, Cutts and McNicholl had maintained contact, initially anonymously, and later through phone calls. Upon seeing McNicholl at the surprise gathering, Cutts immediately recognized him, leading to an outpouring of emotion, with Cutts stating, "I hugged him, we all did. There were plenty of tears."
