17 Jul
Summary
- A teenager's aggressive cancer fight inspired her medical career.
- She used her patient experience to better understand treatment.
- After intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she is now cancer-free.

A remarkable journey from patient to physician has culminated in a university graduation for Ellie Waters-Barnes. At just 14 years old, she was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer. Facing a grim prognosis of only a one in five chance of survival, her life was irrevocably changed.
Her own extensive treatment, which included 18 months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, profoundly influenced her future. Despite ongoing physical challenges, Waters-Barnes, now 25, believes her personal experience provides a unique empathy and understanding of patient struggles.
She described the treatment regimen, which involved significant weight loss, hair loss, and tube feeding, as life-altering. After completing intensive chemotherapy, followed by 28 radiotherapy sessions and a year of maintenance chemotherapy, she is now thankfully cancer-free. This personal victory has fueled her determination to help others facing similar battles.
