6 Jul
Summary
- PET scans for cancer diagnosis now covered by MJPJAY.
- This aims to prevent cost from delaying timely cancer detection.
- The inclusion is expected to be finalized within a month.

The Maharashtra government has announced the inclusion of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY). This crucial step aims to make cancer diagnosis more affordable and accessible for patients across the state.
PET scans are essential for diagnosing and staging cancer, but their high cost, ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000, often results in delayed diagnosis. Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar stated that the decision ensures cost will not hinder timely investigations, allowing patients to receive treatment at earlier stages.
Officials confirmed that the process to integrate PET scans into the MJPJAY scheme is in progress and expected to be finalized within a month. Once package rates are set and uploaded, beneficiaries can utilize the facility at empanelled public and private hospitals. The MJPJAY scheme, which covers 1,352 medical procedures, has also seen its health cover increased to ₹5 lakh per family.
