An advanced precision oncology treatment at a Pune cancer centre has enabled a 74-year-old man from Pimpri Chinchwad to defeat stage IVA throat cancer. His larynx and voice have been successfully preserved, allowing him to resume a normal life.
The patient, a tobacco user, initially experienced voice hoarseness and a neck swelling in early 2026. A PET-CT scan in October 2026 confirmed a cancerous lesion and lymph node involvement, but with no deeper spread. A multidisciplinary tumour board recommended radical chemo-radiation.
He underwent helical tomotherapy with concurrent cisplatin chemotherapy. The treatment's goals were larynx preservation, disease control, and functional voice recovery. By 16 weeks post-treatment, his voice quality improved beyond its pre-cancer state, and lymph nodes regressed. He is now speaking properly, a significant recovery that could have been jeopardized by treatment delays.
Centre head Dr. Santosh Sahu highlighted that advanced cancers no longer necessitate the loss of vital functions. Precision oncology and advanced technology allow for accurate tumour targeting while protecting healthy tissues, enabling patients to return to normal lives with confidence. This case exemplifies how timely intervention and expert planning can lead to life-changing outcomes.
