Research analyzing Israeli registry data for adults aged 40 and above found an 80% higher incidence of ischemic strokes among cancer patients compared to the general population.
The critical period for elevated stroke risk begins immediately after a cancer diagnosis, peaking within the first three months. During this time, cancer patients exhibited a stroke rate 2.5 times greater than expected.
Certain cancer types are associated with a substantially higher stroke risk. Pancreatic cancer patients, for instance, faced a 5.9-fold increase in stroke rates, with 162 out of every 10,000 patients experiencing a stroke. Lung cancer patients also showed a markedly elevated risk, with a 3.9-fold increase.
This heightened vulnerability appears especially pronounced in younger cancer patients and those with advanced-stage disease. The study highlights the critical importance of identifying cancer patients who would benefit from closer monitoring for cerebrovascular issues, given the identified variations in stroke risk across different cancer types.
