We Hear You (WHY), a 32-year-old charity providing vital support to families impacted by cancer, has successfully raised £55,000, averting imminent closure. The organization, based in Frome, Somerset, relies entirely on donations and has seen increased demand for its specialist counselling services, escalating its operational costs.
The crucial funds were secured following a dedicated fundraising campaign launched in January. The final £10,000 was raised during a 24-hour relay race held over a recent weekend, ensuring the charity's continued operation. Charity chief executive Lucy Kitchener emphasized the critical nature of the funds, stating that closure would have been a "terrible loss" for the families they serve.
WHY offers support to residents across Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, and Wiltshire. Families like Ben's, whose daughter Esme was diagnosed with a rare cancer, have benefited immensely. His daughter Olivia received therapy from WHY, providing a "neutral" and safe space for her to process her emotions. Another supporter, Finn, aged 16, raised significant funds after his mother received counselling from WHY following her breast cancer diagnosis.
Kirsten, Finn's mother, highlighted the invaluable support she received, describing the counselling as "brilliant and helpful." She noted that limited support is often available once active treatment concludes and expressed concern for those who would lack access to such services if charities like WHY were to close. The successful fundraising ensures that these essential services remain available to those in need.
