Canada Imposes Ebola Travel Bans Amid Outbreak Fears
27 May
Summary
- Canada suspended immigration documents for residents of DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.
- Travelers from affected nations will face a mandatory 21-day quarantine upon arrival.
- The government stated the risk to Canadians remains low but is taking precautionary measures.

In response to escalating Ebola risks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, Canada has enacted stringent temporary border measures. Starting May 27, 2026, at 23:59 ET, immigration documents for residents of these three countries are suspended for 90 days. Individuals holding approved visas or permanent residency from these nations will be prohibited from entering Canada. Furthermore, new applications from these residents will be temporarily paused.
Additional measures, effective May 30, 2026, require Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals returning from affected areas to undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine. This applies even if they show no symptoms. Those presenting symptoms will be isolated in a hospital for assessment under the Quarantine Act. The Canadian government asserts that while the risk to the public remains low, these actions reflect a precautionary stance given the disease's severity and international health advisories.
