King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia announced on Friday that he has prostate cancer. The 72-year-old constitutional monarch received the diagnosis during a medical examination in Beijing, China, toward the end of February. He and his mother, Queen Mother Norodom Monineath, were in China for their routine checkups at the time of the discovery.
King Sihamoni stated that he will be undergoing treatment for the cancer in China. While the seriousness of his condition was not detailed, prostate cancer is typically treatable if diagnosed in its early stages. His father, King Norodom Sihanouk, was also diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993 and received medical care in China until his passing in 2012 at the age of 89.
Sihamoni ascended to the throne in October 2004 following his father's abdication. His role is primarily ceremonial, and he maintains a low public profile. Before becoming king, he served as Cambodia's Ambassador to UNESCO and was recognized as a classical ballet dancer. He is unmarried and has no children.
