Bussaco National Forest, located in Portugal's Mealhada municipality, has officially been certified as the first Therapeutic Forest on the Iberian Peninsula. This prestigious designation, received on July 17, 2026, places it among an elite group of only four certified therapeutic forests globally. The certification, valid until 2031, highlights the forest's exceptional biodiversity and its suitability for structured therapeutic programs aimed at enhancing physical and mental well-being.
The rigorous certification process, overseen by the Healing Forest - International Certification Office, assesses forests based on specific criteria essential for therapeutic use. These include features that reduce noise pollution, provide calming visual environments, and offer accessible trails and dedicated spaces for relaxation and exercise. Bussaco National Forest, covering approximately 105 hectares, boasts a diverse collection of around 250 tree and shrub species, many introduced during the Age of Discovery.
This recognition is expected to bolster Portugal's standing in health and wellness tourism, emphasizing the growing trend of integrating natural environments into evidence-based well-being strategies. Bussaco now serves as a prime example of how healthy ecosystems can directly contribute to human health, extending its ancient benefits to future generations through a blend of natural heritage and managed therapeutic spaces.
