19 Apr
Summary
- Man survives rare blood cancer relapse thanks to his brother.
- John received a life-saving stem cell transplant from David.
- Over 99% of John's blood cells are now from his brother's donation.

John is recovering well after a second stem cell transplant, this time from his younger brother, David. John was diagnosed with MPAL, a rare blood cancer affecting less than five percent of leukaemia cases. He initially received a transplant and returned home in May 2023.
However, in July 2025, John experienced a relapse, feeling unusually breathless after a ten-mile run. Tests confirmed the leukaemia had returned. His brother David, who lives in New York, was previously identified as a potential donor but couldn't donate due to anaemia.
David focused on improving his health, including iron infusions, and was confirmed as a suitable donor. In October 2025, he traveled from the United States to Manchester for the procedure at The Christie. The brothers shared a pizza the night before, strengthening their bond.
David's stem cells were collected over six hours. He described the experience as surreal, watching his brother receive millions of his cells. John's latest results show an extraordinary 99.5% of his blood cells are now from David's donation. John reflects that his journey has changed his perspective on life and he hopes to support research into this rare leukaemia.
