Brits Embrace Outdated Myths About Colds and Immune Health
17 Nov
Summary
- Over a quarter of Brits believe cold weather and wet hair cause colds
- 29% think cold weather weakens the immune system
- 22% have no idea gut health impacts immunity

According to a recent poll, a significant number of Brits are still holding onto outdated misconceptions about the immune system and how to avoid catching colds. The survey of 2,000 UK adults found that over a quarter (27%) believe simply being outside in cold weather can lead to falling ill, while 28% think stepping out with damp hair is directly linked to getting sick.
Additionally, nearly three in ten (29%) are convinced that cold weather itself weakens the immune system. Yet, despite 89% of respondents feeling it's important to support their immunity to ward off winter colds, 22% admitted they had no idea that improving gut health can play a crucial role in this.
Experts are now working to bust these common myths and educate the public on the true factors that impact immune function. Registered dietitian Lucy Kerrison explains that viruses, not cold temperatures or wet hair, are the real culprits behind colds. She emphasizes the vital connection between gut health and immunity, with around 70% of the body's immune cells located in the gut.
To keep the gut and immune system working effectively, Kerrison recommends focusing on a diverse, fiber-rich diet and incorporating fermented foods like live yogurt and kimchi. With many Brits struggling to maintain healthy gut habits during the winter months, experts are urging the public to rely on science-backed advice rather than unsubstantiated social media trends.
