Bra Size Woes: From Embarrassment to Freedom
23 May
Summary
- Teenage embarrassment over large breasts impacted clothing choices.
- Significant physical pain and difficulty with exercise were experienced.
- A Facebook group was instrumental in researching breast reduction.
Growing up in Leicester, Ranvia faced childhood embarrassment over her large breasts, which dictated her clothing choices and caused her mother distress. The physical toll included back pain, bra strap discomfort, and difficulties with exercise. Her ADHD further intensified the emotional burden of constant body awareness. By age 25, Ranvia, who weighed 50kg and had a 32JJ cup chest, reached a breaking point.
A significant turning point came with the discovery of a breast reduction Facebook group, boasting nearly 6,000 members. This online community served as her primary source for researching the procedure while awaiting an NHS appointment. The shared experiences of members, often stating they "wish they had done it sooner," resonated deeply with her.
After a six-month wait following her GP appointment with no word from the NHS, Ranvia decided to pursue private surgery. Interestingly, a few months post-operation, she learned she qualified for NHS funding due to her low BMI, a rare occurrence described by breast surgeon Lyndsey Highton as happening only in "exceptional circumstances."
