Breakthrough Trial: Less Heart Med for Survivors
2 Sep
Summary
- Trial allows breast cancer survivors to stop heart medication.
- 98% of patients maintained heart function after stopping drugs.
- Participants reported a better quality of life after discontinuing medication.

A groundbreaking clinical trial, funded by the British Heart Foundation, has shown that most breast cancer survivors who developed heart problems during treatment may no longer need to take precautionary heart medication long-term. The study involved 90 women across four UK hospitals, whose heart function had recovered following specific breast cancer therapies.
Researchers discovered that an overwhelming 98% of participants who stopped taking their heart medication experienced no decline in heart function one year later. Only one woman in the trial group developed an issue with her heart's pumping ability. Participants also reported an enhanced quality of life after discontinuing the drugs.
