13 May
Summary
- Instagram reels aim to break breast cancer myths and fear.
- Early detection through self-exams and screenings is crucial.
- Lifestyle changes can significantly reduce breast cancer risk.

In Coimbatore, an oncologist has launched a series of Instagram reels to combat breast cancer awareness. Dr. P. Guhan, director of Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR), uses these short videos to debunk myths, reduce stigma, and encourage early detection. The reels provide guidance on maintaining a healthy weight, balanced diets, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol intake.
Dr. Guhan notes the rising breast cancer cases, with numbers increasing annually in India. He stresses that while genetic factors are uncontrollable, lifestyle changes can mitigate risks. Factors like late marriage, alcohol consumption, oral contraceptive use, and obesity contribute to risk. Early detection, often through mammograms and self-exams, allows for simpler treatments and better outcomes, especially for women under 50.
The initiative aims to address the significant fear surrounding cancer in India, where over 50% of cases are detected at advanced stages. Dr. Guhan encourages regular screenings, including self-examinations for women in their 20s, clinical breast exams for those over 30, and mammograms for women over 40, to ensure early diagnosis and curability.
