Hundreds Urged for Testing After Brantford Dentist's Clinic Closed

A dental clinic in Brantford, Ontario, Dr. George Chan Dentistry, was shuttered on November 3, 2025, after an investigation uncovered failures in sterilization of reusable equipment. Grand Erie Public Health has advised over 800 former patients, who received treatment between November 3, 2021, and November 3, 2025, to seek testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.
An investigation by Infection Prevention and Control found 15 breaches in the disinfection and sterilization of instruments. Dr. Chan is no longer entitled to practice, according to the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), due to his resignation. The RCDSO's disciplinary investigation into the clinic's practices is currently proceeding.
If Dr. Chan wishes to reapply for his dental license in Ontario, he will need to undergo 24 months of college monitoring for infection prevention and control practices, a condition in effect since July 2. While the RCDSO stated such monitoring is a routine condition to ensure compliance, an external dental professor noted this is not a typical requirement for dentists reapplying for registration.
Dr. Chan has stated he will not reopen his practice or work elsewhere, indicating his retirement. The RCDSO confirmed that if he seeks to practice in another Canadian province, he will likely need to provide a Certificate of Standing from Ontario. Former patients needing testing can contact their primary-care provider or a walk-in clinic with a requisition form from GEPH.
